Odd cold starting problem. Common??? 900

My '96 960 (102K miles) seldom starts, or even fires the first time the key is turned and the starter rotates when the engine is cold, no matter how long you crank the engine.

When the key is released to the run position after the first attempt (even a two second attempt), you can hear the fuel pump run for about a second or so, then shut off.

If you THEN engage the starter (from the "run" or "off" position), the car starts and runs instantly and perfectly every time.

Hot (or warm if the car sits hours after running), the car starts instantly and flawlessly every time.

I figure the fuel pressure drops when the car sits for a few days (I seldom use the car every day) and hence the no-start, but while the starter is turning, the fuel pump should run and get the pressure up, so why doesn't the car start with continued cranking (without releasing the key and cranking a second time)?

Thanks,
Bob

In theory, the fuel pump should run while the starter is cranking.

But, I can picture it not running. Have you ever noticed that the lights dim when you crank the starter. Your starter draws so much current that it could depress the voltage going to the fuel pump so much that it does not run, or runs poorly.

Have you tried turning the ignition to run and wait for the fuel pump to stop before you try to crank the engine over?

The fuel pump doesn't run... (question) 900

when the key is turned to "Run."

When I go to "Start," (crank, but the engine doesn't start) and release it to "Run" I can hear the fuel pump run for about one second however.

I wasn't sure if on the 960 the pump should run briefly when the key is initially moved to "Run" to bring the fuel rail pressure up like a lot of FI systems. SHOULD the pump run for a second or two in the "Run" position?

BTW, the instrument lights barely dim at all when the starter is engaged. the battery is in good shape.

I cannot help you with that question.

All 4 of our 740s had fuel pumps that do run when the key is first turned to the run position.
