There are a few reasons I am going with a second set of wheels for snows:
1) Traction: Wide tires are not as good in the snow, so if I get a more narrow wheel, I can run 185s or 195s instead of 205s.
2) To save money: I have 16" Volvo alloys on my brick. And 205/55-16 are ruitinely 50% more expensive than the same tire in a 195/65-15.
3) To save more money: Around here, it costs $12.50 per tire for mount and balance. ($12.50 x 4 = $50) Do that twice a year, and the $40 steel wheels from Tire Rack pay for themselves in less than 2 years.
Plus, for me it's more convienient to do it myself. I can switch all 4 in less than 30 minutes. I'd spend 90 minutes at the shop. (and I just don't like other people working on my car)
