740 tire size 700

The tires on my 86 740 look kinda small for the car. 175/70 R14's
I was at the junkyard the other day an I thought I saw and 86' turbo 740
with 15 inch Volvo rims and tires. Was I dreaming? Did all 86 740's come with 14" rims? Or do I just need to go with 185's or 95's.

thanks.

83-88 740GLE's (standard US model cars) all had 14-inch alloy wheels from the factory. Tire size, same as 240 sedans: 185/70-14
All 740T/760 models came with 15X6 alloys through 1989, and then again from 91-92. Tire size 195/60-15 or 185/65-15
1990 740T's came with 16-inch Hydra wheels, fitted with 205/55-16's.
1989-1992 740's came with 15X6 steel wheels, with plastic hubcaps, tire size 195/60-15 or 185/65-15.
1989-on cars were available with optional 15X6 alloys, in about 6 different patterns throughout the years, all fitted with 195/60-15 or 185/65-15.
1989-1990 740GLE 16V models all came with 15X6 alloys, identical to "old" 740T wheels (like a big version of the -88 14-inch alloy with a big flat stainless-steel center cap, again tire size 195/60-15 or 185/65-15.
1991-1992 940's seem to have all been equipped with 15-inch alloys.
1991-1995 940T's received either 16-inch Hydras or 15-inch 20-spoke alloys.
1993-1995 940's were standard with steel 15-inch wheels, with several patterns of 15-inchalloys available.
I *really* want to find a set of 15-inch "basketweave" alloys, (don;t know the official Volvo name) that look like a big version of the 240 Classic or 240SE wheel.... I've only seen 1 set ever and they were beautiful.... he wouldn't sell 'em to me either!

Thanks all!! I got the four wheels off of that '86
Turbo I discovered in the local self-serve junkyard. Nice rims caps
and nearly new BFG Touring 195/65 R15's for 28$ apiece. Plus a few more tidbits off of the carcass. It has a brown interior like mine. The little crappy stock spare blew out one block from the junkyard on the way over!! I had to limp in and put one of the tires on in the lot to get home. It was so big compared to the other tire it didn't look like it was going to clear the strut. But on now and looking reeeeeal gooood!!!

My '89 745GL came standard with (and still rolls on) 15" 185/65R15 rubber. 195/65R15 is listed as an "optional" size on the door frame label.

The earlier years of the 700 had 14" OR 15" wheels. The later cars ("I think" 89-) came standard with 15". Then obviously the 16" ones in 1990 or so.

I have three different sizes. One is 205/65 15. Another is 195/65 15. The last (steel wheels) is 195/60 15. The last one handles the best.

Hello 740 Man,

Some cars were outfitted with 15" and sometimes 16" (Hydras are what these ones were called- i think). Like you had hinted, many turbos - if not all were fitted with at least 15" tires.

I have a 1989 740GL and the door plate claims that my car came stock with 15" wheels as well (it seems that the later model 7xx cars were always fitted with 15"+ wheels). At the current time, I am running 205/60R15 tires on a set of Draco's. You can upgrade the handling by pulling the 15" rims off the junker and using a lower series tire that has a wider tread and narrower sidewall.

Just my two pennies,

Tim

The later 700 series cars had to be fitted with 15"+ rims because of the ABS and the smaller rims wouldn't fit at all or would rub something awful.
