Limited Slip Differential S90-V90

Is there any nomenclature on the engine plate, or elsewhere, that will tell me whether a V90 has the limited slip differential installed? Apparently this was another one of a handful of options in 97, not OEM.

    Limited Slip Differential S90-V90

This has been an interesting thread, It sould seem that options changed each model year, and back and forth, at that. I've not had a chance t look for the plate, but II see no evidence that there is an orange differential (silver). Everything I've obtained from Vovlo suggests that minve does not hav the ALD.

I don't want to start any arguements here among the contributors. But:

"As far as I know" all US-spec RWD 700/900 series cars 92- have an automatic locking differential. The V90 should have the same differential as your 1992 960. The 1992 models were somewhat revolutionary. They started the ALD, pyrotechnical seat belts, new headrests, SIPS, etc. Many new features that ran throughout the rest of the production.

There is some nomenclature involved with differentials, since the ALD and the LSD would be two different things. I'm not aware ("I'm not aware", others notice quotation marks please) that Volvo offered a LSD option on top of the locking diff option. But that is possible. The locking diff actually becomes a solid drive to each rear wheel, while the LSD is, well, "limited" in slippage.

Most of the RWD cold weather packages were related more to outside temp gauges, heated seats, heated mirrors, etc. The differential wasn't really part of those packages that I know of. ALthough I have seen that mentioned frequently on this site. If you check out Volvo's website, they have some very good data on the RWD models, broken down by year. And that is straight from the horse's mouth.

According to Volvo NA, many of these features were loaded on the first model year, but as the demand set in, they provide them as options. One is the cold weather package that included the heated seat and ALD. I have found that I have the heated side mirros, for which I'm grateful, but no ALD, at least until it can be confirmed. The rep looked up my VIN and read of the options/standard equipment that had been installed. He could be wrong, but in the owner's manual, it states that the ALD is on "certain models....."

Volvo is weird about things like this.

According to Volvo Cars of North America:

        Suspension
        1998 S90
Rear: Multilink independent rear suspension with cast aluminum sub-frame, Transverse composite leaf spring, Gas shock absorbers, 18 mm stabilizer bar and locking differential.

Now pay attention... in the same breath, they list the following as an option:

        Cold Weather Package/Locking Differential
        Heated Front Seats
        Ambient Temp Gauge
        Locking Differential $645

It does appear as if you might not see it on your new car.

So NOW, I'm going to try and figure out what years they definitely had it standard, and what years they had it as an option. The locking diff is a nice option for sure. But the 98 S/V90 is a nice car with or without it.

          Chris,
Yep, I've pretty much given up on the idea that this little puppy has the ALD. While you're looking, perhaps you can determine whether it's even possible to swap differentials, assuming I could find a late model V90 that had an ALD. There is also a possibility that these wagons came with Nivolmats (again, "certain models". I would like to install them if they weren't on there, but don't know if having the Nivos meant other modifications as well, like springs. One could assume this based on early model changeovers to regular shocks, but who knows?

Any light you can shed on this would be appredciated.

If you inspect the data tag on the rear axle, it will have a part number. If it is a 1041, it is an Eaton locker.

The data tag is on the rear of the left axle tube. YOu may have to carefully remove the uncercoating with a rag and solvent to read the tag. What does it say?

I fear I already know the answer, but I will take a peek (or have the technician take a peek) when it goes in for its 90K visit. Thanks for the information.

      What? S90-V90

Whoa there buckaroos! Ya' mean this newly acquired pride and joy may not have heated rearview mirrors??? And no ambient temp guage! This just about tears it, boys, I may have to sell this beast to my unsuspecting son.

The temp gauge is not difficult to install yourself (I can get you one) and the heated mirrors can also be arranged. You need new mirror glass, new looms, and a new switch. All of this, apart from the switch, could come from any 700/900.

It's also painted orange on the 98 S90.

When we bought the 98, the LSD came as part of the Cold Weather package. Seat Heaters, dash outside temp gauge and an LSD. But, we also own a 95 960 that we bought in Florida that has no seat heaters or dash temp gauge but does have the LSD.

        DEWFPO,
Volvo uses Fully Locking differentials not Limited slip. If you jack the rear end of the car up and you spin one wheel the whole differential locks up and does not allow any slip.
