Here's a teaser! Where's my estate heated rear window relay? 700 1988

OK All you boffins out there, no one seems to know where the "Heated rear Window" relay is?
Since owning my 740 GL Estate for over 3 years now, I've never been able to locate this hard to find relay.
My local dealers best mechanic has said that he thinks its either behind the switch on the dashboard - but it is'nt.
Or its in with other relays behind ashtray - but it is'nt.
Have looked everywhere in rear door panel in tailgate - not there either.
Have been also told that car does'nt have one, however, my haynes manual shows one in the diagram as being away from other relay's but will not show me where.
And to top all that, if car has'nt got one then how come it say's in handbook that HRW will automatically shut of after activation by built in 'Timer' after 12-15 minutes.
That could'nt happen without a relay shutting it off - could it???
Have lived without it working for the last 3 years.
Please help if you can before I damage something badly with its indistructable bumper bars - what a great motor!
Kind regards
Bacon Bonce.

My friend, let me slow this riddle for you. Pull out the switch, disconnect the wires and there is your relay, it is not behind the switch, it is inside the switch. Replace the switch with new or second hand and Bob's your uncle.

The relay is integral with the switch. If you have the heated mirrors, they are incorporated in the same switch and shut off after about 6 minutes, rather than the 12 to 15 minutes for the rear window defogger. Can't you come up with any questions more difficult than that?

Do you need a relay? I suppose we could ship you one from the states, but the shipping would be more than the part is worth.

Now it is my turn. Where is the turn signal flasher in a 1988 Volvo 760?

Please enlighten me further? 700 1988

OK Clever clogs, so how come switch is same as rear fog lights switch which is just a switch - you know on & off.
Or do you mean that perhaps the integral timer is part of the loom that fits behind the switch?
This block plug looks no different in size to any other switch.
But no doubt you'll put me straight on that?
Perhaps I have got heated mirrors after all.

Many thanks for your prompt reply.
BB

I can answer your question, but I doubt that you can be enlighttened 700 1988

Yes, the rear window defroster switch looks similar to the rear fog lights switch. The integral timer is part of the rear window defroster switch.

As to why, you need to ask someone who worked in Volvo's design department in the early 1980s.

If your car has heated mirrors there is a second little symbol which looks like an outside rear view mirror on the switch besides the rear window grid symbol. There is also a second light within the switch to indicate when the outside rear view mirrors are being heated.

As to the comments about us clever clogs and the smart remarks, isn't it you who first threw out a challenge?

It's not integral with the switch, is it? Just a guess.
