Emissions Failure & Poor Running 200 1988

Hello All,
Although I've been lurking in this forum for months, this is my first post and I'll try to keep it short. Recently my 240 has been suffering from poor, stumbling acceleration (especially bad when cold). My gas mileage has gone out the window, my temp gauge has been reading sightly higher than normal and it just failed PA emissions (4109ppm NO reading almost 4 times the 1273ppm limit). I took it to the dealer and they put on a new air mass meter and catalytic converter. It still runs just as poorly and failed emissons slightly worse than before! I know my way around my car's engine but felt it was best to let "qualified" people work on getting the emissions end straightened out. I feel like a real sucker now. If anyone's had any experinece with this type of problem I'd appreciate any imput.
Thanks,
240Dude

Fixing emissions problems isn't always a 1-2-3 fix although in certain cases the cause of failure is worse than obvious.

It's much more complex than that. Sometimes a fix CAN and does take one or two tries before it is done right. I'm not talking about going down the street to a "guaranteed to pass" place that will shift everything around and then shift it back when you go back there after passing. (That is a route you can follow, but most dealers won't do it that way).

With a higher temp reading, you are looking perhaps at a lean mixture issue. That's usually the case with NOx. That means, a leaking intake hose, a bad fuel pump or plugged fuel filter, crapped-up fuel injectors, etc. Or bad combustion chamber deposits.

I would recommend having someone check the thing out for you--someone who knows about that. The dealer did what would fix most emissions failures. I have done that before to my own stuff; replaced the airflow meter and cat, and flown through emissions with flying colors. But it isn't necessarily going to work every time.

Also verify timing.

Did you get the "old" AMM and cat? They are likely good spares to keep around.

In your shoes, my next step would be a visit with the service manager at the dealer. What they did to fix the problem, didn't. What sort of shop are they running, anyway, etc. etc.

Good Luck,

Bob

Sounds like your dealer is a scam artist. Putting a new catalytic converter on your car will not solve a rich running problem, if you don't get the problem solved you will ruin the new one too. The first thing I would look at is the fuel pressure regulator (FPR), it is a $35 part. It is designed such that most of the fuel that the fuel pump pumps is returned to the tank. They can clog such that pressure at the injectors is way too high and you will have the symptoms that you describe. The FPR can also break in another way, such that raw fuel is discharged through the vacuum line running to it. Another possibility is a broken ECU temp sensor, or maybe the wiring that is running to it is bad. These are the two things I would look into first.

The high NO readings might also mean a timing problem, or bad EGR system if your car is so equipped (most aren't).

Good luck.
