odometer question 200 1983

My odometer\trip meter has started working lazily, when it feels like it. the speedo works fine. Is it repairable or should I put in a "new" one I got from the local PNP. If I swap it, how do I roll the miles FORWARD(insane, but from Volvo owners - a thing of pride). It needs about 45K to be up to where it needs to be. TIA, Mark

I understand that you would like to "roll-up" your
malfunctioning odometer to reflect the actual mileage on the
vehicle. You don't want anyone to be deceived by incorrect
mileage stated on the odometer.
You should be aware, however, that the subject of
odometers is governed by a Federal statute. See 49 USC
32704, et seq. This statute provides that if you cannot return
the mileage to "the same as before the service, repair,
or replacement" then "(1) the person shall adjust the
odometer to read zero; and (2) the owner ...shall attach
a written notice to the left door frame of the vehicle
specifying the mileage before the service, repair, or
replacement and the date of the service, repair, or
replacement."
Penalties for violating the statute include 3 yrs.
in jail and civil liability for 3 times the damage plus
attorney's fees.
I leave it to you to decide whether you wish to comply
with the statute.

If you're patient you can push the shaft out of the number wheels and reassemble it with the gear on the other end. At least in my experience, the shaft is worn where the pot metal gear is and the rest of the shaft fits the gear well. Study the wheels carefully to be sure you understand how they are moved by each decade before you decide to advance it.

By all means, if you can practice in the PNP, do so.
