I think the 1986 was the same as the 1988. The '88 740 uses the same blower as most early '80s Chevys with A/C. Autozone usually has the part in stock for $15.99. Part # PM105, made by Siemens in Germany. I put one in my '88 about two years ago but it is starting to squeal again.
This motor has 5 mounting bolts. If yours has three mounting bolts, you will need a different motor. Check out ipdusa.com. Look under Rear Wheel Drive > Cooling > Blower Motors. They offer a conversion kit which presumably uses a longer life motor for $93.60.
If I remember correctly, the ground wire is attached to one of the five mounting bolts.

Good luck,
Bruce

OK, you all know the drill. These motors give out and they're fairly expensive fron Volvo. Same thing as a GM motor though. Here are the part numbers from the box I just bought which fit perfectly.

Siemens PM 129
Delco 15-8374; 15-8531; 15-8578; 15-8545
ACI 334725
Everco M4725
Four Seasons 35334
Murray 209209

From Volvo the motor is $185
From local auto parts store, the Volvo motor is $91 (and not in stock)
From same store, the Siemens is $40

Hope you can use this info! Billy

Olivir:
There is a description of the possible replacement motors in the 700/900 FAQs at:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/HeatingAirConditioning.htm#Replacement_Blower_Motors

I can't help you with the wiring, other than the FAQ says that the short black wire with the self-tapping screw is the ground wire.

Hope this helps.

Believe it or not...

Autozone does have this motor...

About $28.00 or so. The only thing that I had to do on my 85 740GLE was to crimp a spade terminal (female) on to the ground wire. Their motor had two spades. Original had one (positive) and the black was ground, on a motor mounting screw..

Also you might check the reason for the demise. Water can drip in through the air inlet (under the cowl) and down into the motor.

good luck,
jc

If you're going in there to replace it, you may as well do a new one. The cheapest I've found, is my friendly neighborhood parts shop, FCP Groton:
3506325 Heater Blower Motor 84-89 Models with 1 pin connector $57.00 Scan Tech

That's really not a bad price. The motor's twice that from Volvo. Installation is not the end of the world but you will spend sone time under the right dashboard. Get a pillow to lie on so you don't kill your back. Seriously.

I have heard that a GM motor works. I've got no idea which one it is, or what model it fits. SOmeone mentioned years ago that they found one, it's the same thing, but the cable was short so he spliced it. Could be. It is a GM-style heater / AC box in a 740. If so, this motor could be $15-20. If you pull yours, the friendly but clueless guys at Autozone might be able to help you match it up. Then again they usually just look at me like I'm speaking Swedish.
"Oh, we'd have to order that."

Roger the comment on Autozone...they still hire Nigerians... 700 1986

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but there's that English as a second language problem that is getting to be universal with service industry personnel in the US. I'm doing my part tutoring but still it's hard to get literacy at that level. And they keep trying to get my bank account number to deposit millions from some political scandal back home...

Anyway...I just beat the Autozone price by about $15 USD on a rebuilt alternator from the local Volvo dealer @$302...yes, I could have done even better from FCP Groton (and certainly could have from at least one used parts place @$64!) but there was the shipping issue....the car is needed daily and the $64 used part would take 3-10 days.
