I've had this problem several times...something in the rear hatch stops working, right? (defroster, wiper/washer, license plate lights, etc.). I've found that the best quick fix is to remove the hinges one at a time (I think there's two bolts and a srew...very easy to locate and remove) without fully taking the rear hatch off and just soldering the existing wires. Of course, this is only a temporary fix. Replacing the wires requires complete removal of both hinges as well as the rear washer hose (don't forget to unhook the wiring harnesses from inside the car located just before the wires reach the hinges) so as you can remove the rear tailgate. At this point, with hinges removed you may now unhook and remove all wiring harnesses. The tricky part is feeding the new wiring harnesses down the sides of the window of the tailgate. I used my antenna...it worked, but it took a long time. Reassemble everything. BTW, if you find a way to re-attach the rear washer hose when reinstalling the tailgate, please let me know.

Peter

I did this job for the first time in May. Use a piece of line to tie the outside handle to a tree or rafter in the garage at about level with the roof. Remove the clip from each side of the lift gate shocks first. Use a piece of coathanger or wire from home depot to feed the new wires in or better yet just take off the platic connectors and tape them to the original wires and pull them through.

what I want to know is how do you unhook the headliner in the rear at the tailgate. I am normally smart but I have not figured it out and I do not want to mess it up

thanks

The headliner is easy - once you figure it out! The material stretches to the rear of the car, and a small plastic lip engages a flap of sheet metal to keep it tight. The process that has worked for me is to sort of pinch it, with a light traction towards the rear of the car, then lightly pull downwards.

I have experienced the same problems, and I finally replaced the wiring harnesses. IPD sells a great kit that includes new wires, with spade connectors for installing with the factory wiring clips. No problem, just follow the instructions, take your time, AND put a couple of old blankets around where you are going to lay the door (prevents many scratches).

and be careful, that door is heavy as I found out with my old 240 GL Estate.
Picture a small guy (5'.7") doing the same on his own, undid last hinge bolt and found myself lying on my driveway under a tailgate. LOL.
