New to Volvos S90-V90 1998

My wife and I are new owners of a '98 S90. this is our first Volvo. We purchased it with ~75K miles. Just the other day a Check engine Light came on while just changing lanes and only accelerating slightly. Really a typical situation. The light has not gone off, however, there is the smell of gas from the rear. Are there many problems with emissions? Has anyone else experienced this, and what was the problem? Expensive?

Also, is the Volvo coolant something I can only get at the dealer or can I find it at most auto parts stores?

Mke sure the gas cap is on tightly. One click is all that's necessary. If you put it on improperly, it will set the MIL.

BTW, was your timing belt changed at 70K? If not, get it changed NOW! Serious engine damage will result if it breaks.

Unfortunately, you would have to retrieve the code to find out what caused the Check Engine light to go On. You need a scan tool compatible with OBD-II. If you go to a Volvo dealer, they will probably charge you at least 0.5 hrs of labor for the simple code retrieval. Alternatively, you can invest in a simple OBD-II scan tool (> $100) and do it yourself. (Sooner or later you will need this tool anyway if you are planning to do any maintenance on your car.) Or, you can try borrowing the scan tool from an auto parts store (AutoZone, Trak Auto, etc.) Good luck and keep an eye on the cooling system. Check the oil cooler for leaks and front control arm bushings for wear. You can also start saving money for the PNP switch replacement.
