Faint whine, pitch dependent on wheel speed '90 700

Kind of strange sound I've been hearing on and off lately, a faint whine whose pitch is dependent on the wheel speed, audible inside and outside the cabin. You can't really hear it at speeds above ~20mph, I suspect it's still there just too high pitch or drowned out to hear. It happens regardless of gear, clutch, even engine (I turned it off and rolled down a hill). I haven't had enough chance to experiment but it may happen after taking my foot off the brake. Brake pads rubbing popped into my head...could that make this sound? The only thing left is the transmission I guess. I haven't really done any work on cars but I'm trying to learn :) 1990 744tic 4-sp man. w/ovd, if that helps. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Richard

Wheel bearings are usually growly when they're going. Also tend to get louder when you take a hard corner, increasing loading on that side. They usually don't wear out more than one at once.
I'd guess center driveshaft support bearing. It's a pretty cheap part but the driveshaft has to come out and the bearing pressed off and on in a hydraulic press. Or see the FAQ for an alternate way- it can be driven on with a long pipe section, if all goes well.
The bearing is either this one or the other- measure to be sure:
(From FCP Groton website) 51.8207
Driveshaft Support Bushing and Bearing Kit fits cars with 44.5 mm front driveshaft diameter or models that measure 208 mm between the center support and the center U-Joint $33.00 Scan Tech

Good luck!

That's very helpful, thankyou. One more question, am I going to do damage by driving on it for now? Because I have a small day trip to make in a few hours :)

I just realized...it could be wheel bearings...crap. Sound likely?
