Request tips for Diagnosis for keyless entry problem 900 1997

I have a '97 960. Purchased used with a keyless remote on the keychain. It doesn't work. The LED light on the dash for the alarm system does not light up at anytime (never).

How does the system work?
Do all 960s come with the keyless system?
Would they make a 97 960, with the alarm LED on the dash, but make it an extra accessory that someone didn't buy at the time the car was purchased?
Even if the remote was bad, shouldn't the LED lightup when the doors are locked?
Please suggest some diagnostic steps for me to follow.

thanks

Sounds like someone had a problem with it and disconnected it. Locking the doors with the key should also set the alarm. As I remember from perusing my manuals, there is a module above the steering column that does most of the work.

If you want to DIY, get the Volvo manual for the system. It is pretty involved to try to diagnose from a distance. (Unless someone knows of a particular fault they have, but mine has worked fine so far.)
