Too Tall To Drive (comfortably). New/move seat? Smaller Steering wheel? 200 1983

Could not pass up a "deal" on an '83 245 Wagon, but as a few hundred miles has proven, and as my screen name implies, ugh!
Not a lot of room for someone 6'5" (and I thought Swedes were tall!).
Anyone out there in Brickland had the same problem? Did you move the whole track/seat assembly back? Are there smaller stock or after market steering wheels?
Thanks!
~Rick~

There is a additional "secret" seat height adjustment front and rear where the seat attaches to the rails. Even though I am a card carrying member of the goon squad (6'3") I found these rather slowly, and only after getting a very sore neck. (previous owner/driver was 5'2" so they had it at the top setting.)

Look under the seat for a 3-stop height setting adjustment down by where the rails attach... If only the '88 760 had such a setting ;-(

Too Tall Too--gimme a 145 200 1983

Hi Rick,

Am on 2nd 240 from '83, had a 242 this is a 245, have same prob as you and I'm only 1m80 (6'3).

Have tried all adjustments possible, I've got front of seat "up" and rear "back" as well as seat back ("re-?")inclined quite a bit, I feel like an astronaut ready for takeoff. Can't pull up too close at stoplights, seems to piss off midget drivers in a hurry. The (lateral) visibility in this position isn't that great either, body pillars add to blind spots, courtesy on the road is history (at least here in OH) and I've had some near misses.

I've basically maxed out the room and am convinced that Volvo lessened the space available cuz I had 140s years ago and felt there was always room on the adjusters for someone quite a bit taller. Headrest also went up higher, was "infinitely" adjustable. People who "fit" don't realize how much 3"/6-8 cm height diff. really makes. It does make a diff. to smaller individuals and I think Volvo made the 240 interior more "intimate" to appeal to purchasers of lesser stature, there are more of them w/ more kroner to spend....

How often do you whack your head getting out of the thing? Never had that prob in a 140. If I can find one in a boneyard, I'm going to measure all these dimensions and find out if my memory is getting bad or if it's just old age and my messed up back talking.

Keep the chin up (down?),

Frank

when will this arrogant country go metric? 200 1983

6'3 is actually more like 1m90, en fait....deGaulle was 2m tall at least, what did he drive in, chauffeured Citroen (DS?), betcha, had a tall roof line for grands hommes....

Try adjusting the seat height.... 200 1983

The 240 is one of the roomiest cars out there for the size...

The seat height is adjustable, granted only by using a wrench and getting out of the car etc...

You'll also get used to having the b-pillar next to your head. :)

I too am 6'5". I am comfortable, though when I bought the car I looked into getting some seat rail extenders. I cannot remember where I found them though. Seems like someone on this board pointed me in the right direction.

My 1.98 meter tall father was happy with both the '74 142 he drove until '87, and the '87 240 he had until this spring. On both cars, the seat was set in in the lowest position.

I seem to remember that on the 142, we had to fiddle with nuts and bolts, you could choose between three positions. On the 240 you just operate the handles like described.

A steering wheel from a later model 240 will help, 85-89 pre airbag, not sure about 90-93 these years had a airbag option, wheel may be different.

Hello,

At 6-5, you are only 3 inches taller than myself. There are height adjustments to the driver's seat of your 240, and they are usually set in higher positions for shorter previous owners. The front control is a left/right lever above the front/back bar. Press down on the front of the seat while operating the lever and the seat should tip forward. Now open the back door and reach just under the rear frame rail of the driver's seat in the center. You should feel a plastic squeeze lever there. Give it a firm squeeze, possibly while giggling the seat back and the seat should pop down to a more southern spot. Using these controls you can also adjust the thigh cushion angle for the ultimate comfort.

Now you will feel why so many find comfort in their bricks!

Happy Bricking!!!

the preious owner of my 79 245 moved back the drivers seat somehow, haven't checked to see how he did it. but it does give extra leg room. More than I need at 6' 2"

I drove my brick for a year, not being able to see that gagues very well with the smaller GT wheel I have, before realizing that you could lower the rear of the seat.

I don't see how the kids can drive very well, getting as low as they do in their honda's or what ever they drive. I can barely see their head above the steering wheel.
