87' 740 w/ ZF Trans & 228K Miles. Slips on Acceleration. Need Help on Options. 700

For the last couple thousand miles the ZF transmission shifts frequently between 40 and 50 mph, then yesterday when I accelerate from a stop or slow speed the rpms go up but not the car. It is like the torque converter is slipping maybe??? I read on other posts that maybe the shift linkage may be the problem but tried moving it slightly and accelerating - no change. The transmission fluid is at full and has been changed every 10K miles for the last 120K miles. The car is in good shape bodywise and we really like it so:

1) Should I look for a used engine and transmission, not the small bearing engine found in 87s', and not the ZF transmission? Would a late 88' on up and AW71(?) use the same driveshaft and is the wiring much different. I assume I would need a different ROM, but am not sure. I realize the OD switch and relay would have to be added.

2) I have an automatic transmission out of a 82" 244 I wrecked a few years ago that worked well even though it had 224K miles on it. Would it fit and would the driveshaft length work? I realize the OD switch and relay would have to be added.

3) What makes the most sense, parking it in the woods and using it for parts? I also have a 91' 740 and 95' 940. I hate to let these Volvos die before their time but maybe that time has arrived for the 87?

Thanks

I was given a '85 740 wagon with a decent body after the previous owner toasted the engine from driving 20 miles with a broken radiator hose. I put in a 1990 engine w/78,000 miles I got on eBay when the ZF tranny started slipping 3 weeks later.
I did a lot of research and the common theme seemed to be that once your ZF craps out replace it with an AW. There is a lot of discussion about which AW's are best but I think anyone will do as long as it is from a later model.

I am now just finishing up a tranny swap from the 1985 original ZF to a 1990 AW70L that I was able to pick up, with all the needed parts, at a local boneyard. Here is what I needed...
Tranny with Torque Converter, Tranny Crossmember support, Drive shaft (I had to use the old drive shaft support crossmember), shifter (due to the Overdrive button on the knob), relay with wiring assembly. Don't forget lot's of cleaner and rags.

Other than the time required to do the work (I've tried to be slow and delibrate) this has been a fairly easy swap and I only have about a $1,100.00 USD into it for both the engine and tranny. This does not include the normal maintainance stuff I did while I had it all apart (Timing Belt kit, rear main seal, tranny filter kit, etc.) plus a used wiring harness.

If the tranny works as hoped, I will have a car that is worth more than I have invested into it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

This post is exactly correct. You'll need the driveshaft out of a 88 or later 740 or a 760 wagon with the AW70/71. NOT a 760 sedan with IRS. Same for the crossmember. In a way, you're lucky that it's an older car- the 89-up cars MUST have the trans with the hole in the bellhousing for the crank sensor, but you can use either early or late AW70 or 71.
This is a much more economical way to go compared to rebuilding a ZF- if it can even BE rebuilt.
Don't forget to get the transmission oil cooler lines that go to the radiator.

There isn't a control unit by the way, it's an all-hydraulic transmission. Only the 960 and FWD cars have electronically controlled transmissions.
As for whether the swap is even worth it- well, can you find another car in this condition for the $800 you're likely to spend? That's how you have to look at it. Good luck!

It might be the computer actually...My Dad had a very similar problem on his '92 960. Around 40-50, it would feel like it was trying to shift frequently and we thought it was the lockup engaging and disengaging, and it also shifted at strange times, shifted hard, etc., although we didn't have that slipping problem when starting off, and replacing the computer fixed it.

    Good luck!

You can drop a 95 block into the car if you want. The year of B230F makes little difference. When you swap out an engine like that, you do a block-only swap. That means, strip the block of sensors and manifolds. And distributor.

Then put the stuff from your car, on the new block--whatever the year.

You could theoretically transplant a 95 powertrain into the car. Not sure about driveshaft/crossmember.

Thanks Chris, that makes sense. I still wonder about transmissions and driveshaft length?

        You're very welcome.

There are some people here who are really well versed in transmission conversions. Hopefully one of them will see this post and contribute regarding the ZF to AW swap.
