B20 Exhaust 444-544

Thanks to the much appreciated good offices of the Brickboard and its denizens I now have a good-enough-for-my-puposes understanding of head and gasket thicknesses and CRs. Now I need to puzzle out the exhaust system for my 544, modest performance B20 for B18 substitution. I'll be using an F head with the exhaust portion of the integrated manifold off a carburated B18 -- 3 studs, 2 ports on the outflow end. To connect to this, which is the better fit in a PV; the dual pipe of the 140 series or the one for the 1800? Or will I have to go for a totally custom set-up?
Bob

Use the front pipe from a B21,( one pipe behind the other ) you will need to shorten it a little where it meets the manifold, this is a great fit over the PV front crossmember and less of a squeeze into the space available also it looks better, for the rest of teh system a 2 inch od pipe works well

I'm using a 140 one in my 544. Didn't know there was a difference. I am thinking of going to a 740 16V one due to its larger size. They are all pretty much alike, I have *never* seen "one-behind-the-other" as I interpret that to mean. Has anyone else?

The B21 front exhaust pipes start out like the B20 with 2 pipes at right angles to the block then they come together and as they bend one is on top of the other before they join into one pipe, I think the pipes were marginally bigger diameter than B20, unfortunately I haven't got a photo of this ( or the car ) but it looks really neat in the 544, probably no performance difference though.
        Regards
        Hans

          Hans,
I've been making a nuisance of myself at my local Volvo parts department, digging through their microfiches and well-thumbed catalogs. So far, neither I, nor the helpfull guys behind the counter, have been able to identify an exhaust down-pipe that looks anything like what you describe. Could it have been local issue for your part of the world, or, perhaps, UK to accomodate right-hand steering? I don't suppose you would have a part number, would you? Even if it doesn't do a thing for performance, looking good while being functional is an asset -- not to mention its value as fodder for Volvo Trivial Pursuit.

Hi there, the pipe came off a 1975 Australian RHD( prob aussi assembled ) 244 with auto and aircon, and B21 motor, I'll have a look at some similar vehicles asap -- isn't it amazing there are still some surprises out there.
