Tips for drilling out broken bleeder valve - tap size? 200 1982

Well, thanks to all who responded to my previous post:

"Tips for removing bleeder valve"

I had been soaking with PB for days. I tapped the face of the valve with a ball peen hammer for a few minutes, applied some more PB, then used a 6 point socket to carefully try and break it loose. No luck.

I guess tonight I will pull the caliper attack that broken valve with some cobalt drill bits.

It looks like a 6mm tap. Can anyone confirm this? I took care of a broken exhaust manifold stud in my 700 a few years ago via increasing drill sizes... this brass bleeder valve shouldnt be too much trouble... right?

Any other tips?

Matt

Matt:

I wouldn't drill it out unless it was broken off. Have you thought about trying an impact screwdriver with the correct size 6 pt. socket instead of the screwdriver bit holder on the business end? Lots of light hits with a small (8 Oz.) ball peen hammer might do the trick.

Tom

I personally would not screw around with this, and would just get a new (rebuilt) caliper, unless you are real hard up for money. It just doesn't seem to be a good use of time when calipers aren't all that expensive.

Best of luck whatever you do.

Sorry I missed your original post.

Not trying to be a smartass, but have you checked the price of rebuilt calipers?

Your probably right Paul, I just dropped $180 on a complete rear brake rebuid though. I might as well save my self the trouble and replace the front calipers as well. They were in my long term plan anyway. Then I only have to bleed the brakes once too. What kind of results will I get if I bleed everything else except the one front bleeder valve that is broken.

My mechanic suggested that a gentle rap with hammer from the top, helps the penetrating oil work. Then a more forceful rap to loosen the screw has worked for me. Hard-fast, rather than slow pulling was the way he described it.
good pluck.
