Is my transmission going? I have 1990 240 with the M47. When you push the clutch pedal in everso slightly it makes a noise. Otherwise it drives fine. What is happening?

    I think I answered this before, and it's still the same answer-
    clutch release bearing is bad.

    A release/throwout bearing does that. The remedy is replacement. I'd replace everything in the clutch if I got started. It ain't worth taking it apart to do part of it. I think there's plenty of room to work on a clutch in a 240, and it's not that bad. (At least it' easier than in a 122 or 140). If you do it and haven't done it before, some reading in a manual before starting will save some grief. Also, be certain you have a couple of floor jacks or a transmission jack.

      Okay, how do you know when to turn the flywheel or replace it? And where can I take the flywheel to get it turned?

      1983 240T 300k miles, newly painted original Volvo Black. Wow!!!
      1995 850 T5R 60k miles, black
      1970 Plymouth 340 Cuda, in-violet purple.

        If the ring gears are OK and the flywheel isn't heat damaged or warped, you can have it surfaced. I found an auto machine shop that bores blocks, shaves heads etc. It was $20 while-you-wait to have it surfaced. They'll tell you if it needs to be replaced due to warpage (although I think that would be rare)

          Any auto machine shop should do this work as a standard service. As noted, not expensive in general.
          Don't forget to replace the rear main seal when in for a clutch!
