stereo turns off when brake pedal depressed...ANYONE??? HELP!!???

I've got an 88 740GLE where the stereo cuts out when the brake pedal is pressed. This happens intermittantly when running and will happen every time when the car is off. I checked inside and it appears that none of the stereo wires are shorted, all the wires look good, etc.

Every time the stereo goes out, one of the relays clicks... I think it is the one just in front of the round bulb warning relay...the fuel pump relay... it doesn't make sense as to why this one would operate when the brake pedal is depressed.

any advice would be appreciated.

thanks.

Make sure your charging system is up to snuff. If your alternator's not putting out good voltage, the brake lights will get most of the available power, leaving little for the radio, etc. Happened to me this summer on a 740 with a bad voltage regulator. Changed the regulator/brush set and all was well.

    Weird.

Try grounding the steering column. 740s are well known for steering column "vapor grounds" -- here today, gone today.

Who knows what kind of odd current path results from this?

      don't understand... can you elaborate?

Hey, thanks for the response, what do you mean by grounding the steering column? Do I take this literally? or is there a set of wires surrounding the column that I should ground?

      Thanks.

      Mike

        Literally.

A number of electrical subsystems depend on the steeting column for an electrical ground, and apparently it tends to be flaky and unreliable on the 740. I've only owned one 740 and have not yet had a failure -- so I repeat the wisdom from others on this board rather than my own firsthand experience.

This oughta be a process of elimination. What things are supposed to happen when the brake pedal is depressed? The switch allows the brake lights to come on, and the cruise control is disconnected. And, the pedal arm moves.

What's the difference between car running, and not? The cruise control is inoperative.

Can't think of any other ideas.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
