What's conventional wisdom, remove the manifold or do it without removing the manifold? 700 1990

Changing out a turbocharger on a 1990 740T with Mitsu turbo, automatic trans.

Chiltons says to remove the manifold/turbocharger assembly.

The volvo turbocharger manual says to remove the turbo (no mention of the exhaust manifold) directly. The volvo manual does reference a special tool, looks like a six inch long crowfoot wrench, to torque the nuts on the turbo/manifold bolts to 22 lb-ft, but other than that, it looks like it's much simpler to just remove the turbo vice the manifold/turbo assembly.

Anyone actually done one of these?

This was taken from the FAQ section about turbo replacements.
[Removal Tip from John Sargent] The Mitusibishi turbos are made to be removed by removing the one bolt and the hinged clamp. No need to pull the manifold. It is the wastegate which remains fastened to the manifold. The Mitsubishi TD05 turbo used on 87-89 700Ts has the wastegate bolted to the turbo with bolts from the engine side of the exhaust manifold. In order to remove the wastegate, you have to remove the exhaust manifold. The Mitsubishi TD04H used on the 90-93 700Ts and 900Ts has the wastegate mounted to the turbo with nuts on studs which are on the manifold side away from the engine. On this turbo, you can remove the turbo and wastegate assembly without removing the exhaust manifold.

If you are replacing the entire turbo then you have to revome the manifold.

If you are only replacing the center cartridge then by all means just separate the sections of the turbo housing. MUCH easier.

I believe that with a Mitsubishi turbo it is just the clamp that has to be removed, no manifold work involved.

I took the turbo off my old 86 and there was no way that turbo was comming off with the manifold on as the bolts that mounted the turbo to the manifold were on the inside of the manifold, should look there and see is you can even get those bolts out.

Just did the '85 with Garrett - you must remove the manifold. Don't know about the Mitsu though...

      cheers - Dave
