Interchangeable ECUs? 200 1992

The mystery driveability problem on my 1992 240/b230f continues. A Volvo garage says testing another ECU on the car would either show that's the problem or rule it out. But they don't have a 556 unit for test.

My car has a 556 ECU, Volvo #3501687 (which I think means it's an LH 2.4 injection system instead of a 3.1). The parts guy at the local dealer says that I can go to a 933 (newer unit) but I would also have to replace the ignition module. Lots of $. There aren't any good PNP junkyards nearby, and it hurts to think of paying a "we-pull-it-and-gouge-you" junkyard $400 for a used 556 when I don't even know that is really what's wrong.

Are there any older units that will swap out with the 556?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug Harvey

    Interchangeable ECUs? 200 1992

By the way, both a 556 ECU (sold as-is, untested) is on eBay for $25.00 and a 933 is also available for $100 (tested)... Do a search for Volvo 556 and Volvo 933.

    Hope this helps..

    Interchangeable ECUs? 200 1992

My '89 240 (LH 2.4) had a 561 ECU. I swapped it out with the interchangeable 951 ECU. It didn't fix the problems my car was having, but I kept the newer model (951) in there.

The 561s and 951s should work with your car. I was able to get mine off of eBay for about $90 shipped. The last few that have been sold on there went for about $175.

By what the posts say, the 561 replaced the 556, and the 951 supercedes the 561. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
