dumb question... how do you actually get to read diagnostic codes? 700

The 700 FAQ mentions that you can read the diagnostic codes on 700 series volvos, but it doesn't tell you what you need to do it? On a toyota I used to have, all you had to do was short two particular terminals and a light would blink a certain number of times telling you the fault diagnosis...

... is there anything similar on the volvo? Do you need a scan reader or something?

You don't. 88's don't have on board diagnostics.

Im not sure if the 88's had this but i know the 89 and up did theres a little block connector under the hood top right drivers side that you pull a pin and insert it into the connections and push the button and it blinks. thats it.

Actually, everybody in '89 had diagnostics except the turbos. I spent alot of time looking for that little black box on the driver's fender before I found that out.
