Feedback: 740 Turbo & Non-turbo 700

I have always been a VW diehard, but would like to change passions!! Looking at 85'>90' 740 Cdn models and I need some input from the group on what things I need to look out for.

What are the commom issues, electrical, susp, cooling,HVAC ....

    Feedback: 740 Turbo & Non-turbo 700

Hey VRvolks, I too are a diehard VW fan. Having owned a 73' Super bug, 82' Scirocco, 94' GTI and a 01' Golf GL TDI. But I sold the tdi to get out of car debt and bought my 88' turbo 740 wagon. Its been very reliable for me in the 20K i've owned it. It now has 183K on the odometer, not too bad for a 14 year old car. The a/c never worked, but thats ok. Had the tbelt done for less than $200. Also this is a non interference motor. I'm actually thinking about selling it to get into an Audi quattro for learning to ski/snowboard. Where abouts in Canada are you? Email me if you have any other questions, turbobrick@shaw.ca

    Feedback: 740 Turbo & Non-turbo 700

I always considered Volvos to be heavy cars with all the alure of a pre 1955 Plymouth, lotsa body roll, non performing, durable and stodgy. A friend of mine got an 185K mile 85 745 non turbo to use as a contract UPS delivery vehicle. When he got it I was surprised how nice it drove. He finally sold it five years later with over 300K onit, still running but quite worn. I bought a 85 745GLE with 190K on it, three years later I have done vitually nothing to the car. Now having been around and helping work on about 10 of these cars, here are my thoughts. The Naturally Aspirated 240-740-940 series are almost indestructable. Just keep the oil clean, the flame trap changed and all normal maintenace stuff done. The 740-940 is more sporty, than the 240 with less body roll and better drivability. The wagons will haul most anything but are not as fast as the sedans. The GLE leather seats, cruise, and alloy wheels are very nice. If you get a 16 valve version which goes some better than the standard eight valve version, keep the timing belt changed. The turbos in the words of a local Volvo fixer, last about 150K most times before needing overhaul. The 60 series, 6 cylinders are a disaster, stay away. The French engine has cam troubles and the parts are very pricey. Many people replace these engines with V8s. If you want ultimate reliability, the Non Turbo 740s are my favorite. The 16 Valve versions and the turbos have more problems but do go better, at a price. Put it this way, the regular 745 wagon works just fine for me and still gets me speeding tickets. Jim

If you want some nice performance, look at the turbo models! After I drove a turbo, I could not have been happy with a non turbo. Be sure that the turbo is OK before you buy. No black smoke on acceleration, etc, Read the FAQs.

Other things, check out the air conditioning and the overdrive. Up there, you may want to look hard at the body for potential rust problems.

I had a 1.8 Jetta automatic and the comparison between that and the 740 T is awsome. My partner is really impressed by the performance of the turbo 4 cylinder. We used to be Volvo Marine dealers and know the 230 engine well, though the boats don't use so many relays!!!

    Regards
