converting from generator system to alternator - elaborate? GM or other alternator? 140-160

Greetings. I'm sorry I haven't searched archives yet on this, but I'm about to purchase a '68 car with the generator system rather than an alternator. The system is presently working, but I would like to know how much of a project I'll be in for if I want to convert this car to an alternator setup, and while I'm at it, I wondered if there are any recomended non-volvo conversions which people have done, such as the popular GM alternator (or GM-type) that many do on older cars to decrease replacement costs and increase available amperage.
Thanks for any advice,
-Brian

Brian;

It's nothing to fear, and results in a big improvement! Total cost is around $220. See details at: http://www.intelab.com/swem/altkit.htm

Cheers

Hi there,I've done both.If you want to go via new than go the GM way.If you dont mind the junkyard way than go bosch.I went the bosch way(to lazy to make a braket for the GM)
I found a Alt from a later 140 and used the block mount on my b18b(all was very easy)
It works great and my euro H4 Headlights are now white at any rpm.
