Sorry Steve; didn't mean to cut you off.
I'm just proud of the research that I've done about that particular differential. Some straight from Eaton's technical website, and some other questions from 4x4 guys who know their stuff.
I asked the same question a few times before but never got a really solid answer. I did get some helpful anecdotal information. There is some additional material in the 700/900 FAQ about it as well. Since I have a couple of these units, I wanted to know exactly what the deal was. From what I've gathered, I'll be using synthetic for mine, but my dad's can remain normal since he drives VERY conservatively and would never spin a tire on anything but glare ice.
The Eaton unit--yours--apparently likes LSD fluid. If you use any of the big synthetic brands that say "OK for limited slip" then it should be fine.
Eaton seems to recommend limited slip compatible oil, or supplemental LSD additive. However, some technicians who do a lot of work with that diff in other applications (General Motors), say that the Eaton "locker" is fine without the additive as well, the exception being in very high horsepower applications where clutch chatter is evident. Or when a lot of heavy hauling is done.
In the case of the 960, it might not be necessary, but it is a powerful engine nonetheless. If you never "use" the locking feature of the differential it could run without it indefinitely. But if it does come into play here and there, it would be gentler on the differential internals to have the LSD oil.
The big name synthetics all seem to be ready for limited slip use. I personally use PZL Synthetic 75w90 because I like Pennzoil producs now since they've reformulated their bases, and because I use other PZL synthetic products as well. I know that Mobil 1, Amsoil, Redline, and probably a bunch of others are ready to use for limited slip/locker applications. The most important thing as you probably know, is to get an API GL-5 fluid.
Now all someone has to say is, "Pennzoil is NOT a true synthetic!" Yeah... I know. But I got a big volume at a deep discount :)
