Custom grinding down 10mm wrench for fan removal 700 1989

I've ALWAYS had trouble taking off the four 10mm nuts holding the fan onto the water pump pulley..They keep rounding off because the open ended wrench is the only tool I can fit onto these nuts. Now I have the idea of taking an open/closed end 10mm wrench and grinding down the closed end to fit in behind the fan clutch and remove these pesky buggers without rounding off the corners. Any one done this before?
Tips????
Gracias,
el Raidman

I have removed/replaced those nuts on both my Volvos many many times with just an ordinary 10mm open end wrench and have never had a problem. Why not just put on new nuts and be sure to use a good quality wrench. You may be overtightening and causing the problem.

I was contemplating cutting a slot wide enough to slip over the stud, but of course the real answer is an electric fan.

Yes!

You don't need to destroy a Snap-On for it, but use something of moderate quality, like from Craftsman and up from there.

Lowe's sells a nice 10mm six-point box end wrench for about $6 that is thinner than Craftsman and can be ground further if needed.

I have a box end wrench which I have ground off just to fit in and over those nuts that hold the fan and pulley to the water pump. It works great and gets the too tight nuts loose without rounding off the edges of the flats.

my kid took one of these ratcheting box end wrenches, you know the kind that dont have a toggle switch to change direction?you just turn the wrench over to change direction.you should have seen him go.i dont know how he managed to fit this thing in there to begin with, but he was sure it was going to be a real time saver.dont try this.removing the wrench had something to do with a dremel.i saw yesterday that sears is advertising the same wrench, only now it comes with a toggle switch.

I've always had success with my craftsman combo wrench, using the box-end side. It is a tight fit but goes on there OK. Maybe other brands of wrenches are thicker?
