84 DL SW / Idle problems 200 1984

Problem: Searches at idle and sometimes stalls.

History: Recent purchase / drove car for about a week and noticed
that the fuel pump seemed noisey and seemed to cycle up and down.
Before I got to look at it the she died (in my driveway ;-)).
Everything seemed to check good back to the fuel pump so I replaced
the external pump and filter. Fired right up and runs well at 1500rpm
and up but doesnt want to sit and idle after it warms up... also cleaned
the bypass solinoid out to see if it was sticky...
Anything else I should check? What controls the idle after it warms
up that could be having a problem?

TIA

Its probaby the in-tank fuel pump. It has either died or the fuel delivery line has disentigrated. This causes the main pimp oops, pump, heheh, to work double duty, and it eventually dies. So, you replaced the main pump and it fires right up, but this pump will soon die the same death as the last pump, until you replace the intank pump, delivery line, and filter sock. ITs a likely scenario given the age of your car.

have you checked all your air systems?
air filter (if it ever got wet its ruined)
flame trap (widely overlooked)
throttle body (take if off and clean it well)

also, change your fuel filter and don't forget about the in-tank pump filter(sock) $6 and easy to do.

examine your vacuum hoses or all hoses in the air system for cracks, replace if necessary or for a short term fix seal well with electrical tape.

if none of these seem to help them your injectors are probably dirty or gummed up. if needed run your tank down to the begining of the red line and dump some heavy duty injector cleaner in the tank (JB, sea foam, etc.) and run the tank nearly empty. you may want to change your oil after that though or else your oil will not lubricate to well.

I did this to my '84 245 SW and it helped alot, but my injectors are gummy and haven't gotten new ones yet so i still have a slight twitch.

Hope this helps,
Chuck
