Rally this weekend...with a volvo! 200

Hey everyone, just wanted to mention that there is a SCCA sponsored rally this weekend around Bancroft, Ontario Canada called the Rally of the Tall Pines. The best part is, there is an '80 242GT racing in it. I've seen the car race before, and its fun to cheer them on. It's definitely worth coming if you're in Ontario and have the weekend to spare. I'm working at the rally. Well, just thought i'd mention it

Rally this weekend...with a volvo, a real GT even! 200 1980

Thanks for all the interest and support! Skip and I will be having some fun up there this weekend. Last year I wound up doing a bit of damage to my '82 242 at this event, this time I'm going to stay out of the ditches a bit more ("ditch-hooking" is only the fast way around a corner if there aren't any rocks in them). This rally quite often has a fair amount of snow but this year it'll probably be mud since it's been quite warm which means we'll be going a bit faster than we normally would up there. There are a fair number of crests that have straight roads on the other side so we'll be seeing a bit of air-time.

Well, time to go put the car on the trailer and load up the truck. Thanks for all the support, we'll "press on, regardless".

Rally this weekend...with a volvo!

I've seen a Volvo rally car at a local SCCA event (Wild West SCCA ProRally) here in Olympia, Washington. Here's the website for the car. This isn't the same 240 is it? I also saw a rally'd out 700-series that same weekend when I was downtown. Cool cars.

Thanks for the link! Would you happen to know what those deelyboppers on the roof are? I'm guessing vents, because in one of the images the dr. side one looks closed.

Yes, they are air vents. They are the same type you see on large trucks. Not practical for normal use but essential for rally. They can be tilted up in front for max air, up in back for venting or closed in the cold/rain. Dust is less up at roof level which is why we mount them up there. The rest of the glass (except for windshield) is replaced with lexan and in not moveable. Saved coule hundred pounds in glass, mechanism and inner door panels. We are not the west coast car you see. Bill Malik runs a really tricked out 242 that includes a one-of-a-kind head from Sweden, a 5 speed sequential transmission, coil overs plus other goodies. Bill may be the best RWD driver in the country. Rumor is he is building something REALLY INTERESTING for next season. Speculation is it's AWD, turbo and of course, Volvo. John Lane runs a 262 turbo. V-6 with twin (I think) turbos. Power beyond belief. The school bus yellow 740t is another well developed Volvo in Rally. Was owned by Karl Jardeval (sp?) but he has sold it. SCCA rules prohibit 20 year old cars from entering National events (ProRally). That's why Bills car has 2 doors and a '93 front clip. We are doing that this winter for next season. Check us out in NE US and Eastern Canada next season (CARS and SCCA ProRally)

indeed, air vents. Since the driver and codriver are wearing fire-retardant racing suits, they can get quite warm. The vents in the top provide easy access to lots of outside air. Most rally cars have them. good observation

Thanks, I thought the story sounded familiar! The guy in the co-pilot seat sold me my 83 242 Ti this summer. Good guy, everything he told me about the car has been confirmed independantly over the last four months. My son and i plan to go see him race next spring in Wellsboro, PA., its near my house. Thanks again.

Nate,

Thanks for the plug! George and I will be there looking to do even better than at Voyagers. It promises to be a great event with a full field of the top Canadian teams. We're not contending for overall but look to do well in Group 2. Stop by and say hello.
