alternator light 200

Had an electrical glitch on my 1986 244DL instrument panel - Alternator lamp came on during first minute of a clod startup. Noticed that my fuel gage was on empty even though the tank was truely full. After a few minutes of driving, the alt. lamp went out and the fuel gage returned to the true setting. Bad ground?

More likely a bad wiring harness. The little red wire from the alternator goes under the front pulleys and is often the first thing to go when your wiring harness goes bad. It's got a tough life, with oil, heat, dirt, water and exposure attacking it. Make sure it's not grounding out somewhere.

Are the alternator brushes old? When they get worn shorter that 5mm, funny things can happen. The labor is the same to check them or to replace them.

A new integrated brush/regulator unit is around $75 at the dealer. Maybe they are available aftermarket, I've never checked. It is possible to get just the brushes and solder them in. The process is in either the Archives or the FAQ's.

Good Luck,

Bob
