760 Turbo, why so noisy? 700

My 88 760 t-wagon seems to growl on the highway like it has a droning glasspack or something. My mechanic tells me turbos are loud. I bought a 240 for work, its so nice and quiet, a peaceful car to drive.

Around 35 or 40 it's OK, on the highway at 65-70 it seems to have a rough, growling, performance car noise. I wish I could quiet the thing. Is this the nature of that turbo unit pushing gas through the pipes, all exhaust is stock.

760 Turbo, why so noisy?

I heard a similar sound at that speed on my '89 while driving home after I bought it.

Answers to my post were that is is likely a leaking exhaust gasket between the exhaust manifold and the turbo.

Because I am presently reconditiong the car, this could not be confirmed.

check transmission and engine mounts as well as any leaks in your exhaust in the rear, or lose hangers. sometimes an exhaust will just resonate at a certain frequency generated by driving at a certain speed.

760 Turbo, why so noisy?

My 760 isn't noisy at all. I've never heard a sound out of it that comes even close to sounding like glass packs. Does the turbo feel like its producing power ? It seems to me that if the turbo produces any sounds it either a whistle or a air-sucking sound. What part of the car is the sound coming from ? front? rear ?

I would post this in the main 700 forum for more responses. I don't have any idea how you would do this.. but it probably could be done. I think for starters you would have to get rid of the nivomats and convert your rear end to use conventional volvo shocks. IPD may or may not sell lowering springs ??

It's your motor mounts. If they are the original mounts they've collapsed and hardened, the whole car will rumble and resonate, especially over 50 mph. It should feel like your 240.
