Heating system - Problem 900 1997

Hi,

I have got a strange problem, the complete heating system sometimes works sometimes not.
For instance, I take the car in the morning, switch the heater on and it works, I drive to the supermarket, come back 15 min. later and the heater doesn't work at all. The same happens vice versa.
I mean, the fan always works but not heating is coming out, only cold air.
I have also tried the air conditioning and got to the same result, no heating coming out.
It is really strange because it looks like a contact that allows it to work or not according to the moment.

I really don't know where to start to look at, can you help me in detecting the problem?

Thank you
Alex

    Heating system - Problem

    Hi,

    Thanks for your feedback.

I had the Volvo dealers on the phone today, they suggested to check the cooling liquid, if there's enough...
I think the problem is not that, but tomorrow I will have some time to check.

I have another problem, the rear water sprinkler does not work, the engine is working because I can hear it, but not even a drop is coming out, while the front ones are perfect.

    Where shall I start?

Finally, is there a book you would recommend so that I can better understand how the car is made inside before disassembling it without knowing what to expect?

    Thanks again
    Alex

could also be a malfunctioning/sticking heater hose valve...on the outside of the firewall in a heater hose, generally the top one or the hotter one from the block. If it sticks closed you won't have heat to the heater core.

Not sure about a couple of things here: car, climate, and distance you're talking about. My first guess, however, would be a thermostat that's stuck open. What's the temp guage saying? The 960s especially will never get very warm, even after several miles on the highway. It's also not good for the engine to run cold.

It sounds as if you have a problem with the vacuum used to open the air flaps inside the dashboard. Have you ever gotten a blinking light on the front of the heater panel? If you have, it's unfortunately in the auto-climate-control unit and you might have to buy a new or used one.

If not, the vacuum check valve in the hose from the engine compartment may be bad, or you could have a torn diaphragm on one of the actuators that opens and closes the main air flap. This is the same symptom that occurs with Turbo's upon acceleration, when the check valve goes bad: fan runs, air never comes out. I have seen rips in the vacuum actuator just next to the gas pedal, under the center of the dash by the firewall. Not a nice one to get at but at least you can see it without disassembling the whole world.
