Tailgate Window Washer '88 240 wagon 200

Well, after replacing the wiring harness in the tailgate then replacing the relay switch for the rear wiper, everything finally works but the washer pump. The stalk will activate the wiper arm but....no washer fluid shoots out the back dispenser thingy. The pump works fine in the front and I assume the same pump activates the fluid onto the tailgate window. I have looked in the Haynes manual and have not been able to locate this animal. Anyone know what to look for next? As usual all help much appreciated. Thanx Dean

Recently fixed the same problem on '88 wagon. Attached to the bottom of the washer reservoir are two identical pumps. Sedans have one. They are easy to remove and repair on the work bench. Disassemble pump bottom portion to clean out hardened minerals and soap residue, lightly smooth surfaces with fine wet/dry sandpaper where needed, a little wd-40 worked in, then put it back together. Good as new and free!

There is a separate pump for the rear squirter. It's probably got a plugged line or is just shot. I can't tell you where it is, but I suggest just following the fluid line back from the reservoir to find it. don't forget to check fuses!

Why bother fixing it? I've had two wagons and never thought that the rear wash/wipe helped enough to make it worth maintaining the system. When the wiring failed on the 1980, I said to hell with it.

The 1992 is going to get the same treatment unless a vehicle inspection station tells me different.

Of course, I've logged most of my Volvo time in Texas, but two years in New Jersey didn't persuade me otherwise. Guess I don't score very high on compulsive personality.

Fire away.

Working from memory on this one... I believe you will find that there are in fact two seperate pumps; one for the windshield and one for the rear. Chances are the pump is seized up from lack of use/corrosion. You can check this by first using a test lamp on the electrical connection for the rear pump (located below and in front of the washer fluid reservoir). Remove the connection and attach your test lamp lead while someone activates the washer switch. If you are handy/ambitious you can remove the pump and carefully open it up and repair it. I believe I have a procedure written up and stored in my Volvo folder- email me if you would care to have a copy (jrstarkie@att.net)
