Mag Wheels 200 1985

After serval years of tire replacements, flats, etc., my mags have become a little scratched up. Anything I can do to make them look new again? Thanks. Hugh.

one of my turbo wheels had an 'chemical stain' when i bought them, as the 'years past' i began to be ashamed of their appearance, dismounted the tires 'ruff sanded them'-[to allow adhesion of the new paint]- went to the local body shop supply store, looked thru their 'books'. found 1982 GENERAL MOTORS LIGHT SLATE GRAY METALLIC to be a perfect shade match. i used DUPONT single stage acrylic enamel with a gloss hardner and a gravity spray gun. after 3 years the finish is holding up well.
downside is the price a quart of acrylic enamel will cost around $40, a gallon of enamel reducer will cost around $25, a pint of gloss hardner will cost around $30--------material enuff to paint 3 sets of wheels--12 wheels---
----unless you've got some 'in the business' that has a custom mixing station and will allow you a deal on a single 'gun of paint' the qouted prices are 2001 i paid about $70 in 1999 when i did my wheels

i used the hardener to allow for a good 'flow and a durable finish' allowed for lite color coats and 'built my finish over a thirty minute window of time'

the local professional wheel 'refinishing service' wanted $300 for the complete
job---with a guarantee---you may be able to get a better deal, just search around! good luck

The original finish on your wheels is actually silve paint. The best thing would be to strip them, wire brush to a clean finish, and repaint.
Eastwood Company has some of the correct wheel paints. Volvo's wheel color is a "warm" silver- if you use the "aluminum" spray from the typical hardware store, it won't look right (you'd have to do all 4 to match). After the paint dries, a clear coat is highly recommended. I also recommend Castrol Super Clean (purple spray bottle) for removing brake dust from the wheel. It's amazing stuff. Most auto parts stores have it.
If you have the tire off during this, it would be a REALLY good idea to buff the bead seating area (inside where the tire goes) with a good fine abrasive wheel- the corrosion that forms here will cause no end of headaches, lots of leaks at the rim. Seen it 100's of times.
Have fun!

Some good responses here. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find more than you care to read.
