I recently bought a B230FT and I dont know if it is a 1989 or a 1990 motor. The stamp on the head indicates the motor was manufactured on June, 18 1989. Does that put it as a 1990 as I was told? The turbo that was on it is not the Garrett(air research) like on the early 2.3 liter, i think it was the Mitsubishi or something,so thats why i think its a '90. Any information would greatly be appreciated! Thanks, Steve S

Reason for concern-
I specificaly wanted a 90+ motor because it has more internal webbing for incresed block stiffnes, 4 millimeters more of metal to the connecting rods, and a relocated axial bearing for less creank flex. The 90+ motors are the strongest B230FT made. I threw a rod in my 85 745 with too much boost (over 20psi), and am doing an engine swap.

Your engine should have the large connecting rods and the re-positioned thrust bearing. Volvo upgraded to the K block (larger main bearings and re-positioned thrust bearing) early in the 1988 model year, and upgraded to the large connecting rods early in the 1989 model year.

The Mitsubishi TD05 was commonly installed on 1987 through 1989 model years. The Mitsubishi TD04 was installed on 1990 and later model years. There is a small metal tag on the engine side of the front of the turbo compressor housing. Clean the tag off and read the turbo model number. That should clarify the model year of the engine.

It is probably a 1990 engine with that head casting date. Why the question?

also your dating the head not the motor...might have had a new head on it (not unkown is it..)

That sounds consistant with a "90" motor made in '89 installed in a car made in '89 and sold in the '90 model year. "90" B230FTs had the Mitsu, at least in the 780's.
