Oil in exhaust 700 1986

My 1986 740 turbo with 160K+ miles now puts out prodigious blue smoke for the first few miles until the engine warms up. After warmup there is no visible smoke. This is a constant daily occurrence, worse in winter months, of course. Engine performance is normal and there is no engine noise. What are the most likely causes and simplest methods of diagnosis?
