Installation of Keyless entry for a 740

I know there are instructions in the FAQ for how to do this but I am having a very difficult time following them.

Does anyone have more detailed, step-by-step instructions for adding a keyless remote to a 740 (maybe even with pictures)???

Also any suggestions on brand or type of remote to purchase?

The guys at Jo-Di's (local stero place) want $400 do do this job!

TIA,
Ian

As Rob stated, for the driver's door locking you can use a passenger side lock motor, but you will want a door lock motor of the same type the car has one it. The lock motors changed sometime from 1988 to 1990. I can supply pictures of both types if you need.

But why do I need both "driver's rear door lock motor and a passenger's front door lock motor and linkage"?

You only need the front passenger locking motor and linkage. The later 700/900 use a lock motor that fits directly on the latch mechanism, so no linkage is needed. You never stated what year 700 series.

That will be the early style requiring the early style of lock motor and a little bit of linkage.

You can make this a bit easier on yourself by picking up the driver's rear door lock motor and a passenger's front door lock motor and linkage. This will give you factory parts that will bolt in, at least. The "custom fit" actuators require you to hack up your door skin- these bolt in in the correct location.
Jo-Di's does do a great job with these, but as you say, they get top dollar for it. You will need the control box from a keyless kit to make this work.
Basically you make the lock motor that you add operate the driver's door lock rod- the rest operate just as if you pushed the button down yourself. Only the driver's door has no lock motor, do that's why you have to connect this linkage. You'll need to run a power wiring harness to the new motor- try to grab one from one of the lock motors you get in the junkyard.
If you can't find a donor car, try Autowerkes in New London (860-443-1066) or European Auto in East Lyme (don't have # handy). They both have plenty 'o parts cars.

Ian,
400 is too much, about 250 is right, not 400. Can't help you with the step by step instructions sorry.
