How much would it cost to restore the interior to a different color? 120-130

Wondering about how much I would have to spend to change a 122's interior upholstery color. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jason

For about fifty bucks you could take an upholstery class at an adult school or community college and do it your self. It is not that difficult. I change myupholstery from time to time and it only runs about $90 for the whole interior. Something to think about.

Jason,

There are two companies that come to mind in Europe,

www.nordicar.com/ukindex.html

www.scandcar.nl/defframe.htm

Both of these companies sell replacement interiors. The shipping is a little higher, but the prices are pretty good. Remember that most of the prices you see will not be in US dollars so you need to convert. I found that the prices were very competitive even with the shipping.

Also, last time I looked JC Whitney sold a seat upholstery set for the 122 but it only fits the 2 door. (Back seat is different) If you are looking for Red or Black that option would run you alot less.

Good Luck

Both ScandCar and Nordicar in The Netherlands are pretty steep in their pricing. Like most other European and US resellers, they stock up at either CVI Automotive or Veteranprodukter in Sweden. Luckily, both CVI and VP sell to end buyers:

www.cvi-automotive.se

www.vp-autoparts.com

Both have web sites in English and both are (very) used to Transatlantic customers. Stick to the source and save even more...

Has anyone tried the JC Whitney route? While it's cheaper, I wonder if it's worth it--I've seen so many complaints about JC Whitney products that I wonder if it'd just be throwing money away.

Thanks,
jason

Jason,

I ordered a red set for a 1964 122S four door a few years back as was suprised at the quality. I never got around to the installation because I got rid of the car, but the material was good and heavy, simular to the original pattern, and the stitch work was not bad. I know you "get what you pay for" but you would have a hard time picking a JC Whitney set (properly installed) from a medium quality upholstery shop. I am sure the JC Whitney set is much less than the upholstery shop.

You can also order extra material for the door panels and such if you want.

Yoy probably shouldn't get to exited about the JCWhitney stuff. I believe the only 122 specific item they still stock is the plastic dashboard dress up cover. I don't know how long ago it was when they had upholstery for the 122. But hey, give them a call, let us know what you find out.

I went and pulled out my September 1998 JC Whitney catalog (#615J) and on page 22 & 23 is Custom Fit Seat Covers by Autocraft. The company has been in business since 1942 and has over 5,000 patterns. For the front and back seats the kit cost $189.95 for the Channel quilted Leather-look Vinyl Seat Covers (JC Whitney part# 78KN5990UF). Vertical channels are 1 1/2" wide. Colors available are White, Black, Lt Green, Gold, Tan, Beige, Lt Brown, Red or Maroon. Same fabric by the yard is $27.95. (This is good if you plan to cover the door panels.)

Remember that these prices are four years old. I am sure that Autocraft is still in business and still has the 122 pattern.

BTW For the 1800 drivers, there are three complete carpet sets also listed on page 25:

Polypropylene Plush Shag # 78KN6611NF $179.95
Nylon Plush Shag Pile #78KN6616UF $164.95
Polypropylene Deep Loop Pile # 78KN6621UF $129.95

This is not intended as a endorsement of the products listed above, but I have ordered the seat kit for the 122 and was satisfied with the product as delivered. Hope this helps.

It looks like it would be about $1400 to *replace* all the interior panels from a place called Swedish Treasures

http://www.swedishtreasures.com/1201.html

about half way down the page...

There may be cheaper alternatives, I don't know.

BUT

The previous owner of my 1800 had changed the interior color from red to black (and the exterior from white to red for good measure) and it looks like he just used that vinyl spray paint. I've used the stuff before on a vinyl Eames knock-off chair and it worked alright exept I didn't really clean it very well (I didn't clean it at all) and the paint rubbed off eventually. If you go that route, be sure to clean and degrease the seats and door panels really well. The upholstery on the seats in the 1800 is holding up really well and is only showing red through on the driver's seat piping. I'm guessing you want to switch from that butterscotch pudding color to a more pleasant hue? I'm considering the same thing in my 122. The right way to do it would be to replace all the parts with ones of the right color, but that's waaay too expensive to consider.

skaal!
