Thanks for all the help on the auto tranny situation. Changed the filter and she's a beaut once again. Anyway, now I need help with my fuel injection. My '81 with K-Jet will start beautifully when cold or hot. Let her sit for about 10 minutes after shutting off, and she will crank forever before she starts. Let her sit for two hours or more, she starts on first 3 or 4 cranks. I'm thinking could be faulty check valve or accumulator, does this sound like a good start. Any suggestions? Also could I get some recomendations on fuel guages. Should I buy or rent one, can I rent one, what kind of adaptors should I look for, what brands, etc...

Oh, the '81 has a new Bosch CPR and fuel injectors. That's what my mechanic recommended. He did CPR and I did injectors.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Brickers. --Matt

Good idea as suggested to check fuel pressure, as this sounds like a weak fuel pump to me. Hot there is enough residual fuel to fire it up, and cold the control pressure is much lower. Either way, it starts, in between it doesn't.
Check the pressure first though.

This happened to me on a non-Volvo and was due to leaky fuel injectors. They flood the ports/cylinders after shutoff if left for more than a minute or two - but if left for an hour, the fuel dissipates or evaporates and you get a normal start. This is not what you want to hear after shelling out for new injectors, but how many years has it been since Bosch sold the CI units to car makers - so how long may they have been on the shelf?

Confirming symptoms would be black smoke from the exhaust on those reluctant starts and a rough engine for a few seconds until it clears. Absent those symptoms, the other posters' analyses are probably right.

I had a 1980 320i (it also had CIS) that did the same thing, almost impossible to start when warm. I never did figure it out but wired a momentary contact switch between +12v and cold start injector so I could give it a squirt and that at least cured my starting problems. The BMW dealer actually told me to do that!

If it doesn't start on a couple of revs, cycle key from off back to start and see if that helps. I think the fuel pump runs for the first couple of seconds when you start cranking, if it is a check valve thing I would think it should start up after cycling the key. I had a check valve problem on a 1986 Dodge Caravan and it would start fine after a short "sit" but would be harder to start after sitting for a while as system fuel pressure would bleed down.

The gauge kit I have was from JC Whitney and is strictly for Bosch CIS and has all necessary adapters/fittings to use it on a wide variety of vehicles. I bought this about 10 years or so ago and it was $54 if I remember correctly.

Good luck,

Justin

If you have never replaced the check valve and accumulator at 225K miles, just do it. Symptoms are close enough. And normally i'm not a shotgunner.

If that doesn't help then do the fuel pressure test stuff....

This assumes good fuses, good FP relay and ignition are perfect...
