3rd brake light question 200 1983

At the boneyard Wednesday, I saw a 3rd light , wanting to upgrade my 83 started pulling the wiring out...It seems the wires went into the differential!? Is this right? Couldnt get it out of the differential. Also the light itself came off the back window bracket, put how do I get the holder off the window? Looked like it was part of the window?( Thin black plastic holder with 2 arms to hold the light unit on- couldnt get a screwdriver underneath it. Should I get an aftermarket unit from Autozone?

Get the light and wire it directly to the brake light switch on the brake pedal. The factory 3rd light models have a different BFWS relay to accomodate the different load. If you hook it to the switch you by-pass the BFWS relay.

Oughta work. I am doing the same thing with my 1984 245GL. Had to get new door harnesses anyway, so I got the 1986 type. Not done yet, though.

Good Luck,

Bob

You have to do some tricky wiring or do without the bulb failure feature. Volvo changed the harness and, I believe, the sensor under the dash. Those were the speedometer sender wires you found going to the diff. Might be worth the trouble adding a 3rd eye to save your rear end, though.

I bought a 3rd light-new in the box- from a yard sale for $3-prob would have been $10-$15 at Autozone--had an '84 wagon at the time--had to attach it to the existing wires behind the tail lights--trial and error--but final result- worked fine-wasn't all that hard. Mounted easily with double-stick tape. (Didn't have anything to do with the differential.)
