valve cover 700

What is the best way to get out a broken stud for the valve cover on a 16 valve engine. It's the stud in the middle of the back of the cover next to the distributor cap. I just don't want to mess up the head. Also, when I replace the cover is it best to use some kind of gasket compound or let it alone. As always I appreciate any and all advice. Thanks! 90 740 gle 132 ,000

I had removed a stud (or rather that pesky oil pump bolt) by grinding a slot in it, and using a screwdriver to unscrew it... it worked for my application and it might for yours aswell...

Is there any stud left sticking up that you can grab?

I had one stud break off with about 5mm sticking up. I used a hammer and punch to knock around the edge (hit at the tangent of the diameter) and this finally came out after about a thousand taps and two hours. Needless to say, soak in PBlaster. These studs are not too strong and they aren't mounted that deep either.
