Why does oil dipstick read on only one side? 200 1980

I went to check my oil the other day because my oil light flashes once during heavy acceleration in first gear. I found that the oil only shows up on one side. Is this giving me a false reading? The car does not appear to leak any oil though I'm not sure if it burns any or not.

Engine off, wait 5 minutes and check. Wipe the dip stick clean each time. The stick goes into a puddle of oil in the oil pan so if there is oil, it'll be on both sides. You may be scraping the oil off the back of the stick when you pull it out. The symptom you describe sure sounds like low oil. If you're still not sure, add a quart and check again. Better too much than not enough.
