PVR V6 GURUS 200

I have heard that in 1980 or 1981 Volvo had sent out a service bulletin on the engines informing the technicians about the oiling problems on these cars or lack there of,and of a modification to improve on the problem. Does anyone have this or seen this service bulletin and what exactly was Volvos' solution for this problem? TIA.

I have had to rebuild a few of those engines, as much as I tried to avoid it. My understanding is that the small screen the French put in the oil passageway to heads is to be removed, as it clogs up with crud and that is what limits oil flow to the heads, which takes out the rockers and lobes quickly. There are two of them as I recall, in the timing cover area.

Of course the B21 and B23 engines suffer the same fate when overheated at high mileage after infrequent oil changes - the passageway across the head gasket plugs and shuts off oil flow the cam, siezing it. So even the trusty old red block has its problems that way. The B230 engines used a machined passageway in the block deck to improve oil flow.

If there was a service bulletin you should be able to find it on alldata.com or alldatadiy.com. You may have to subcribe to get the text of the document though but should find wether such a bulletin is out there. Try searching your model and year an see what they have.

Thanks for the info. I'll try the website you mentioned. Also since you have provided me with a date and tsb # maybe I can get someone {mechanic] from Volvo to look it up! Thanks again.

Volvo's ultimate solution was to no longer use that engine!
I recall that back in the 70's, Car & Driver magazine turbocharged a 265 with the PRV engine for a "Boss Wagon" project. They were a bit aggressive with the boost and kept breaking piston rings from detonation. They were so disappointed with it that they got rid of it quicker than any of their other project cars.

The specific lube problem was that the rocker arms were insufficiently lubricated. I don't know what the SB 'cure' was, though. Maybe search the DeLorean sites?
