I'm looking at an '84 242 turbo coupe. Nice looking car, clean CarFax report, no rust, all the parts work (sunroof, pwr. mirrors, etc.), strong runner, 133k mi., $1400. Sound reasonable to you guys? What engine am I looking at? I'm most familiar with the B230's having owned numerous 760/940's, is this an earlier vintage of the B230? What is similar between the engines? The intake is different but it is a red block. I'm looking at it for my daughter who is going off to college next fall. Thanks...

Sounds like a deal to me....I would jump on it for that price. The 242's are my favorites, just hard to find in the midwest....

Bob, not a bad price outright, but it's the unknowns that will drain you in an older car. B-21 engine has more mechanical operations than B230 series, but still a proven engine. The turbo will present more maintenance requirements than a straight 240. Guess I'd invest a few quid into having a very reliable inspection by knowlegable techs before buying. If the seller's up front, $1400 is a fair to good price.

Bob,
A turbo 240 may not be the ideal car for a daughter away at school. They may require a bit more tikering than either a later 700T or a non turbo 240 of similar vintage. It is however a very fair price on a great car for a guy who has an '88 to give her for school :-) I'd snap that up in a second if you don't (and if it was in So Cal) Check the wiring harness in the engine compartmet as you would with any pre '88 Volvo, they seem to degrade even faster than others due to the higher underhood heat. I've been driving an '85 240T for a few years now, love the car, it's listed for sale on my site but don't bother asking, that's just to keep the wife happy, she seems to think 4 bricks is too many.

Bob, that is a nice price for the description. Some might try to talk you out of getting it while trying to find out where it is for sale.

The motor is a heavier precursor to the B230, the B21ft, with sodium filled valve stems and other improvements meant to support combustion of fuel with pressurized air intake. The fuel injection is mechanical (very little electronics- only for idle and lambda) but the maintenance requirement is higher, i.e. frequent oil changes; the stuff related to more heat in the engine compartment.

Like I said, some might try to get it before you do.

How's that for a sum up from the owner of a bunch of normally aspirated 240s?
