rear diffy giving out, or driveshaft/tranny problems ? 200 1982

this only happens under load, & usually after making a semi sharp corner, but it feels like the rear diff is letting go. the rear end shakes & makes a bit of noise almost like the pinion gear isn't catching, letting off the power & trying again, or pushing in the clutch & trying again a few times will restore power to the rear wheels. last time i changed the oil back there, there was a LOT of metal filings attached to the drain plug. i suppose it could be coming from the transmission, but it really feels like it's coming from the back of the car & i don't want to change the tranny again. has anyone ever experienced anything like this ?
thanks =)
oh & i can't find the tag on the axle anymore to check it's ratio for a swap.

    Time to call the Junkers. Ralphs in Abbotsford, Pickapart in Chilliwack...outside of Vancouver. In the Van. area there are more choices....and your choice on rear end ratio. Upgrade depending on your driving style.

    I too have killed a diff in the turbo, so it happens...but make sure it's not a u-joint....or bushings....

      thanks for the tips, actually, ralphs in surrey is about the only wrecker w/ a good selection of 240 series & reasonable prices. still, i got my tranny for $100 privately vs. the 300+ all the wreckers were asking .. 'n' they're quoting about the same for a rear end if i pull it myself.
      i replaced the u-joints already, i'm sure all the bushings are completely shot, but i can't see them being the cause of nearly complete power loss to wheels ..
      could be the clutch . but i really don't want to pull the tranny again.

        Well yes Ralph's in Surrey does have a good selection. Prices, though even in Canhuckian $'s.....sometimes leave me wondering. I mean there are times when I feel like "such a deal" and I go have a big Surrey East Indian buffet...($5.95 all-u-Can-eat!)....then other times when I feel like I lost my U$ wallet somewhere in there deepmudholes.....

    The rears are Dana 30's I'm surprised a toy engine like the Volvo's will bust it up. BUT....

    At the rear, can you take the driveshaft and pull it away from the rear end? see if you have a lot of play. The Pinion nut may have loosened up.

    Take the cover off the rear axle, how does the Spider gears look? Have you experience any banging when turning like gears are binding? If so it would probably be a broken Spider gear.

      well the previous owner did manage to kill the tranny, i seem to remember there being some play in & out w/ the driveshaft. whole rear end is a bit sloppy. debating doing to bushings at the same time .. or pushing it off a cliff... oh well .. i just placed a wanted ad for a new rear axle .. don't have the time to take it apart to fix inards ..
      anyone in the lowermainland bc have one for sale ?

        Quick thought, If you are going to have most of the rods down because the Rear end is out..Hell Do the bushings. Especially the Trailing arm bushings on the 'new' rear end. Who knows how many miles or how many bumpy roads those have seen.
        If you get the same gear ratio, it prbably is quicker to swap out the rear over pulling apart the Ham on the existing.

    sure sounds like the rear. i think thats a 3.31. putting an auto(3.91) rearend in would really wake her up around town at the expense of highway mpg.
