965 Auto Transmission Lockup Occassionally Reluctant TO Unlock 900

Just purchased 965 1992 with 128,000 miles on it for $2000. On first test drive it would shudder when transmission was locking up. It had sat on small used car dealers lot for a year so teh 1st thing I did was have the tranny filter and fluid changed. Most times it works fine except for repeated locking and unlocking in slow traffic. Occassionally whwn trying to stop the converter is reluctant to unlock and teh whole car shudders until it drops to 500 rpm when it finally unlocks. I read FAQs and prior posts. Have't read of anyone elses symptoms quite like this. Any ideas anyone?

It describes your problem to a tee. Fix is to replace lock-up solenoid and is a common problem. I would like to get my hands on a bad solenoid to see if I can determine what goes bad. The part lists for about $250. Also check FAQ.

The trans does not have to be removed.

Drain the oil, remove the pan, the filter, then the solenoid.
Full instructions may be in FAQ.

ps. I recommend disconnecting the negative battery terminal befor servicing.

Let us know how it goes.
