Yes, yes, it is a 264 and when it runs, it's a beautiful thing. I had problems with it last month when the shop told me that the engine was dead. I told them to adjust the valves and put in treatment and lo and behold an air leak was found in the intake manifold. I drove away after rubber was replaced.

Damn thing quit on me later and I traced it. Found out that the engine was not grounded to the chassis which was a simple fix. OK, that was Friday. I was driving to my mom's to take her car back and stopped to get some tail light bulbs. Came back out to start her up and nothing, not even the solenoid clicking which was what was happening before the trace. Waited ten minutes and VROOM! away I went. I drove for another two hours with three stops and it cranked every time. It seems like its OK now.

I was thinking back and remember jacking with the stereo which sounded like it had a short. Could this be related? I haven't replaced the stereo in this car yet.

Most people will clean the + and - cable ends and the battery posts, (myself included) but forget to chk. the other ends of those two cables. Had a no-crank a month ago with my wifes '83 240. It turned out to be the neg. cable at the BLOCK connection. It was very tight, but upon removal the block boss face was rusty along with the lockwasher. Cleaned all the surfaces with my pocket knife and bolted it back together and it now cranks faster than it has in a long time. Chk. it out. Tom

FWIW, on my '84 I had similar symptoms. sometimes it would start, other times just grind.

Came to find a faulty ceramic fuse ws arching to one below it. A crummy fuse caused me months of agony.

Pull 'em and see.

once had a similar prob. not on a volvo had me going for weeks...

turned out it was a bad earth on the battery to body strap..it was tight but had corrosion under it that acted like a current limiter...lights etc would work...but no crank, weather was a big issue wet and it was fine, dry it had problems...i would check the earths...costs nothing and may be the prob...
