wet/dry/1 or 2 light snows a year. 96 960 205/55-16.

By all means research www.tirerack.com by size 205/55/16 and '96 960. I have a car like your and when I did and consulted them one year ago they recommended Bridgestone RE730 205/55/ZR16 as the best performace tire for wet and dry but not for snow. I ordered those and sure enough they are the best tires I have ever driven for performace whether wet and dry, ride and noise. Now they have the Bridgestone SO-3 which their tests and reviews claim is better than the RE 730 in all respects (except treadwear) and better than the best performance tires from Michelin and Pirelli. All these are summer rather than all season tires, but you write that you see light snow one or twice a year.

    tires...what's your flavor? 900

I have a set of Yokohama Avid touring on my mercedes and my 240 wagon.

Excellent tire for the money. Had a set of Dunlops and only got 18K out of
them. Kumhos are a good value too. Tirerack is the place to buy tires.

Using the Tirerack.com site to reach their rating system, I found the Yokahama Avid Touring to be the apparent best tires for the money. I put a set on my wife's Bonneville and we love them, plus they give an 80,000mi warranty. They have a wear rating of 560, and A Traction and Temperature. The rolling resistance must be pretty low, also, since the highway mileage increased from 29 to 31 mpg over the old tires for the 3700 pound car with the 3.8 liter engine, which constantly amazes me (Plus it out accelerates the 965 easily while besting its fuel economy.)!

On the other hand, my '96 965 came with brand new Khumo Touring 723 tires, and I love the handling and grip. They have a wear rating of 400, a Temp of B and Traction A.

Both seem to be nice tires.

    John,

I was doing my own research about getting a new set of tires for my 95 volvo 940. I came across this tire which sounds quite promising. Here is the model: Dunlop SP Sport A2. I haven't try it yet but you can take a look at the spec and see if it fit ur needs. For more information, you can also check the following web-site: http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp.(It has being referred quite often on this web site.)

I bought the Dunlops(SP Sport A2's)from Tirerack.com about 2 months ago and had them drop shipped to a local service garage that mounted and balanced them.

I have them on my 93 945 having replaced a set of Pirelli's that the PO had put on. I have found them to be excellent so far. Handling is good and traction even in the snow is respectable. Wet traction in excellent as well.
They are a good tire for the money. I tried to order the Yokohama Avids but they were out of stock at the time. I have had them on my previous car, an Olds Aurora, and they were excellent as well. I put a set on my Outback and they
ride just great. Another good tire buy. Tirerack.com is a great place to get tires. The only drawback is you lose out on the free rotation deal.

I have the Dunlop SP Sport A2's on my MB 190E for summer tires. They are excellent.
Regarding buying tires online: I don't mind not getting free rotation -- I don't want those tire-store goons touching my car any more frequently than is absolutely necessary. So thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather do the rotation myself. But I would definately miss the free "road hazard" protection that comes with the tires I get locally. If I get a nail in my tire, they repair or replace it free.

Just my 2-cents. (Arguably worth that!)
