Replace timing tensioner ever timing blet change ? 200

It's about time for the timing belt change out for my 1985 . Last time ( about 6 years and 50/k moles ago mostly city driving) I changed seals , water pump , and tensioner, outside belts along with the timing belt . Would I be taking a big risk in changing the belt only this time ?

I'ma gambler. I put 3 belts in, I'm at 217000 and I have yet to do a Tensioner, a Water pump or seals. My fingers are crossed. I have no leaks and no noise. I DO have a new water pump sitting in my garage so I'm not waiting for a mail order when it does go.
I say you should be good to just do the belts.

If the tensioner makes noise when I spin it, or has any play in it, I replace it.

The thing is, if you drive 50k highway in a short time, the tensioner has a lot less wear than if it is a city car and takes years to roll up 50k. In that case, I'd say replace the tensioner.

I can't see gambling on a marginal piece (if it is in fact marginal) for $35. The last time I had to call the hook it was a hundred bucks.

Your tensioner should still be OK, but I agree, check it for rattly noise. Every-other timing belt change, or 100,000 miles or so seems to be the interval for the tensioner.

    Pete,

I change the tensioner with every other T-belt change. If you're a gambler, you can check the tensioner by spining the wheel on it and listening to the bearing. If it growls, then probably a good idea to change it. If it sounds good you can install it hoping fopr another 50K miles. Always check the quality of new tensioner before installing it.

If it has been a while or you are unaware of the maintenance history , go ahead and change crank and cam seals, water pump ( good time for a cooling system flush before yoy start ) , and the outside belts too.
