"I have an alternator from a 1986 240 that I want to put into a 1980 240. The wiring is slightly different, I think the 1980 has an external voltage regulator. "
The external voltage regulator should work with the 86 alternator.
The wiring should hook right up also. Just make sure you get the posts corrects
positive and negative and it will work great.
I installed a 100amp alternator from a 760 turbo into my 242turbo, although the fit is a bit tight and I cant install an external voltage regulator like I would like to. If you dont already know, external voltage regulators keep the voltage around 14v all the time, whereas the internal ones drop the voltage as the regulator heats up.
"Can I make a swap and only hook up the red and green wires back to the battery? The dash idiot light has already failed in the wiring harness. "
Yes. But do you have a charging problem now with the alternator in there?
The dash idiot light is what is known as an exciter circuit which the alternator needs to start charging. I thought mine had gone out when my alternator wasnt charging but it turned out to be a bad ground on the alternator.
hope this helps
take care
