Timing Belt Change Interval for 93 940 900

What is the change interval for a 93 940 timing belt? Is it the same for a 94 or the rest of the 940 series?
My 93 945 had it last changed at 47K. It now has 78K. I figured it was closer to 50K between belts....or?

You will never get an RTFM answer out of me. (Besides, there are no 93 16v 940s.)

Either way you look at it, you can go until around 100k with that belt. At that point I'd personally say, replace the belt and the belt tensioner to avoid future problems. I believe that belts CAN go for 100k, but it is largely dependent on how the car is driven. A highway car can easily get 100k from the same belt, a city car might only get 55k, but it could take seven or eight years. Of course, a lot of city cars have low miles, but could use an hourmeter instead of an odometer.

I cut this from Volvo's service interval manual and it pretty clearly says what the 50k/100k service schedules are. I learned something from this.

So for your convenience: Two service intervals from 1993MY service lit. Details what gets changed for which models.

Unless I'm mistaken (I did RTFM), the turbos use a heftier belt right out of the box and the interval was set at 100k. The NA's came with less than hefty belts and their interval was 50k. I suspect the aftermarket belts are all the same by now (why manufacture 2 different belts when one will replace 2 applications?) and can stand up to 100k (to be sure, check the replacement part # for both type engines). Both my 940's lasted to 100k when I replaced them. I did readjust the tightness periodically on them. Don't forget the tension idler when you change the belt. It will start screaming around 140k, freeze up shortly thereafter, and there goes the belt.

So it's RTFM, 50K, the newer ones are more robust, 60K and 30K. Perfectly clear. Thanks and Happy New Year!

This is and RTFM (read the f- manual) item. If the car is a 16 valve, follow the change schedule scrupulously. A broken belt means bent valve$$$$. For an 8 valve engine, a broken belt means the inconvenience of a car that won't run until the belt is replaced. You have the option of running to failure (probably 150,000+ mi) or replace at the interval of your choice (100,000 mi?) to avoid being stranded at an inoportune moment)

I agee with IROLL. I think the timing belt fixation on a non-interference engine like the 94 940 is a mechanic's "Boat Payment" conspiracy.

Mine broke last week...was out of service 3 hrs and lasted 122K miles. No problems with other isssues. I avioded changing 2 unnecessary timing belts. The down side, of course, is that you can't predict when yours will go if you choose the "I dare you to break" methodology> On the other hand, even a new belt can break at any time.

Actually, the timing belt maintenance interval is 50K. The tune up and valve
    adjustment is 30K. HT

the round-tooth timing belts that Volvo switched to in ~'93 are very robust and can easily go 60k .... if you are interested in sretching the interval.

The 940 timing belt should be changed every 30,000 miles
