Go to the Features menu here at Brickboard and read 700/900 FAQ "Buying a used 7xx/9xx" and have the car throughly checked by an independent Volvo only shop (you can find one listed under "Shops" under the Feaures menu). If the car checks out OK, buy it because you have found the Holy Grail here at RWD. With maintenance at a reputable independent Volvo shop or doing it yourself, and perhaps one trip to a Volvo dealer or Volvo shop to renew the rust proofing, you should have a comfortable, safe, fast, reliable and economical car for another ten years or 200K miles. Enjoy it.

Looking at buying a 1994-940, can anybody give me any info, or possible items to look for. 900 1994

I recently bought a 1994 940 Turbo for my wife, and drive it every chance I get. I love it. My newest car purchase to date, but I can still work on it.
Check the FAQ section, they have a really good list of points to check out, luckily, mine was well maintained, and none of the trouble spots were evident.
Look for service records. Make sure all the gadgets work, the 940 has lots of them. Check the sunroof operation, look for signs of coolant or oil leaks. I crawled all over my car before I bought it, drove it 3 times before I signed for it. Regular oil changes are the key.
Good Luck

Oh, 1 more thing, here's what I've done to it so far, out of necessity.
Water Pump and Thermostat
Coolant temp sensor- for dash gauge
Radidator
Hoses to oil cooler
Brake pads all 4 wheels
Front muffler
Transmission mount
In the spring will do rear shocks and bushings. Complete tune up, and new O2 sensor, will also change timing belt and tensioner
bought the car with 99k
currently has 113k
I like the car.

As long as the price is right the 94 940 Turbo is a very nice car!!! 87K is a young one too. Sometime the turbos can really suffer from previous owner neglect (I own 2 that are that way). At 87K you should be in good shape. I'd check the turbo hoses for holes/wear those can really affect performance and lead to some costly repairs. The radiator is another source that needs attention, the origanal volvo radiators are a little crappy and don't hold up well on turbo. You are looking at a really nice car that should be a blast to drive. They also have a very engine with piston oil cooling and longer pistons, which means it is very robust and should not have the piston slap problems the older turbo motors have (pre 93) and I own 2 pre 93 turbo engines and they both have the piston slap.

However, is piston slap really something to worry about?
